Fighters, friends and family gathered to celebrate Cung’s definitive victory over Frank Shamrock. An insane energy filled San Jose on fight night and it only got crazier as the evening progressed (digressed). Everyone awaited Cung’s arrival to his celebratory party and there was no mistaking the moment he entered the building. A roar overtook the “fine dining” establishment and it interrupted dinners next door! Cung walked in, all smiles, rocking a sick blazer from one of his movie endeavors with the MADCOR Warrior thermal under it and the BIG BAD STRIKEFORCE BELT over his shoulder! Cung then made his way through his network of friends and family, sharing his victory.
Master of ceremonies Bob Goldberg was in attendance, enjoying the buzz in the air. Josh Thomson was in form, running on Cung’s extra adrenaline. Josh will be lending his UFC experience to Cung’s new gym in Milpitas over the next few months. I got a chance to speak with South African fighter Trevor Prangly. Trevor and Travis Johnson were there showing their support as well. Cung’s better half was still happily recovering (as many of us were) as if she had fought Shamrock. A few shots went down, along with a few stories, overall it was a crazy night and I ducked out right when things started getting crazier.
I also bumped into Daniel Puder with his “hard to miss” honey and promised him a shout out so here it is.

MADCOR Representive / Trainer Ray Yee was at the Duke City Final Fury, January 26th in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Cornering with Yee, was local wrestling legend, Coach Lenny Lovato Sr. sporting MADCOR’s “Trespass” tee. The night was a huge success for ABQ Kickboxing & MMA, who had four fighters that fought and all won, including New Mexico MADCOR sponsored fighters Mikey & Lenny Lovato.First up was Mikey “The Burque Bulldog” Lovato vs Jeremy Martinez fighting at 145lbs. Following the call to battle and a cheering crowd “The Burque Bulldog” Lovato rushes into the ring on a mission. Lovato begins the fight with a kick, a short exchange and Lovato shoots in, taking down Martinez against the cage. Lovato then lifts Martinez and slams him to the ground gaining side mount control. After dropping a few elbows, Lovato breaks Martinez’s defense and slides in a rear naked choke submitting Martinez in 3:02 of round one! Next was, Lenny “The Godfather” Lovato vs Nick Buschman fighting at 150lbs.Lenny, calm and collected enters the ring poised and ready. Buschman starts out round one with a kick leading to an explosive exchange leaving Buschman with a trickle of blood over his left eye. After a quick recover and a few back and forth swings Lovato takes Bushman to the ground entering the last 10 seconds of round 1. Both Buschman and Lovato enter round 2 more aware, swinging and dodging shots. Buschman jabs and Lovato counters with a strong left hook, which tags Buschman sending him back a few steps earning a high five from Buschman himself. UFC 79 Nemesis.
UFC 79 was definitely one of the best shows in Mixed Martial Arts history and MADCOR was there at the Mandalay Bay Events center to witness it all live! The main event pitted two former UFC Welterweight Champions, Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes against one another for the third time. After dominating Matt Hughes for two rounds, Georges St. Pierre proved that he is one of the best if not the very best welterweight in the history of the sport. St. Pierre finished Hughes with a shoulder lock to arm bar combination at the end of the second round and got a verbal tap out from Hughes with only six seconds left in the round. Georges St. Pierre was awarded an interim title but made it very clear that he won’t consider himself a champion until he beats Matt Serra, the current Welterweight Champion and the last fighter to beat St. Pierre for the title.
In another battle of epic proportions, former champions Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva squared off in one of the most anticipated MMA match ups of all time. Fans had been waiting six years for this very fight to happen. Liddell and Silva definitely did not let the fans down as they fought intensely for three brutal rounds. Liddell caught Silva with a few shots in the first round stunning Silva who staggered backward toward the fence but was somehow able to return a few big shots of his own that rocked Liddell. Liddell actually went down once but was able to shake it off. Silva got a big cut over his right eye. Both fighters gave it their all for three rounds but Liddell ended up on top with a unanimous decision of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
There were several other great fights including Lyoto Machida vs. Rameau Sokoudjou in which Machida won with an arm triangle toward the end of the second round. In a war of attrition, Eddie Sanchez beat Soa Palelei by referee stoppage 3 minutes 24 seconds into the third round. Rich Clementi beat Melvin Guillard with a rear choke at the end of the first round. James Irvin won on a disqualification after being severely hurt by an illegal knee thrown by Luis Cane while Irvin had one knee on the ground. Manny Gamburyan quickly beat Nate Mohr with an ankle 1:31 into the first round. Roan Carneiro defeated Tony DeSouza after taking his back and pounding him from behind. In the first bout, Mark Bocek scored a unanimous decision victory over Douglas Evans.
All in all, UFC 79 was one of the best shows since the conception of the UFC. This epic event will definitely go down in history as a great night for the sport!

The Ring of Fire MMA tournament in Manila, Philippines pitted teams led by Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Josh Barnett and Gokor Chivichyan against each other in one of the greatest battles at Araneta Coliseum since the famous Thrilla in Manila in 1975 where Muhammad Ali battled Joe Frazier for the world heavyweight boxing championship. MADCOR was there to witness all the action ringside and in the Gracie locker room. Sully of MADCOR helped Royce and Royler by wrapping hands and cornering the fighters during the five back to back Gracie Team bouts. He also helped to warm up MADCOR fighter Cleber Luciano Costa who fought in MADCOR’s new MadFlex fight trunks. All of the Gracie fighters fought their hearts out but the Gracie Team ended up with 0 wins and 5 losses against the Shamrock Team. It wasn’t a sign of good things to come for the Gracie Team when heavyweight fighter John Marsh who was supposed to fight former UFC Heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez missed his flight and wasn’t able to compete. An alternate heavyweight, Hector Ramirez was assigned to the Gracie Team but ended backing out of the fight on the night before the event over a contract dispute. Another and less experienced alternate Kevin Fitial of Guam was flown in at the last minute and agreed to fight Ricco Rodriguez on a moment’s notice.
In the opening bout, Cleber Luciano of Team Gracie lost to Evan Dunham of Team Shamrock via a front choke in the third round. Then Gracie Fighter, Jorge “Macaco” Patino fought his heart out but lost to Kyacey Uscola of the Shamrock Team on a split decision. In the third bout, Team Gracie’s Daniel Serafian fought a great fight but lost a decision to Mike Whitehead of Team Shamrock. The much less experienced Kevin Fitial represented Team Gracie but lost to Ricco Rodriguez after getting beaten down by a series of devastating low shin kicks followed a big head kick delivered by the former UFC champ. To seal the fate of the Gracie team, Katrine Alendal gave it her all but ended up tapping on an arm bar to Tonya Evinger of Team Shamrock. Ken Shamrock’s strategy of bringing in and trying out fighter’s from outside of his
group ended up paying off in a big way. (Ken has a team in the IFL and is very familiar with the MMA team format.)
Next was Team Barnett vs Team Gokor. In the fight of the night, Japanese fighter Koji Oishi of Team Barnett battled non-stop for three five minute rounds to win a unanimous decision over Team Gokor’s Karen Darabdayen who also put up a great fight for all three rounds. Second, in another amazing bout, Japanese fighter Yuki Kondo, also of the Barnett Team, beat August Wallen of Team Gokor. Renato Babalu Sobral, representing Team Barnett defeated Rodney Faverus of team Gokor with an arm triangle choke from the mount. Finally, Jeff Monson of Team Barnett took on Hakim Gouram of Team Gokor and beat Hakim on a unanimous decision.
Overall, it was a well run event. Platinum Fighting Productions put on a great show at Araneta Coliseum; a modern day “Thrilla in Manila” and MADCOR was there for the Monumental event. Congratulations to Team Shamrock and Team Barnett on their impressive wins at “The Ring of Fire”!

MADCOR wants to thank everyone who came out and supported us at the first-ever North American Mixed Martial Arts Expo. It was truly a momentous weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center where the industry’s best and brightest came out to show why MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world today. A huge showing on both days of the event only hinted at the big things that are around the corner for MMA and MADCOR. We gave attendees a preview of our 2008 line and your response was absolutely incredible. Our fightshorts have been pre-ordered in such great numbers we’re having to boost our production to avoid back orders! Add that to the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received on our Ts and hoodies, and MADCOR will be riding into the New Year on a tidal wave of momentum.
A few shout-outs to some of the folks who helped make this weekend so memorable:
- Special thanks to Cristiane Ripari for putting her Brazilian charms to work all weekend for MADCOR. We’re proud to have you on our team!
- Huge pimpadelic props to the classy Shonie Carter for gracing us with his one-of-a kind presence this weekend.
- Much love for Cleber Luciano and Lili for representing as they prepare for the Ring Of Fire match in the Philippines.
- Congrats and thanks to Davey Dove for bringing by the belt he won this weekend at Grappler’s Quest in Vegas.
- We also want to thank everyone who worked so hard to put together NAMMAE (especially our main man Steve for hooking us up with your prime spot!), because without your hard work, none of this would have been possible.
- And finally, all-time great thanks to the one and only Rob “The Dutchman” Kaman for stopping by and saying hello.
